KAOD’s Classroom Prototype to Be Built Throughout the State
K. A. Oldham Design, Inc. (KAOD) was recently commissioned by the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) to create a classroom prototype to be constructed at various locations throughout the state. The prototype is planned to be repeated 6-8 times across Georgia in 2018-2020.
Classroom Prototype Fills an Important Need for the GDC
With a regular and recurring need for classroom space, the GDC commissioned KAOD to design a classroom prototype that can be constructed at any location in the state. KAOD’s design calls for a 48 x 62 pre-engineered metal building (2,976 SF) with space with four classrooms (each accommodating 13-15 students), two ADA-compliant bathrooms and an officer’s station to oversee activity in the corridors and entry. The first classroom is being constructed at Phillips State Prison in Buford, GA.
“We’ve enjoyed collaborating with the Georgia Department of Corrections on the classroom prototype,” said Kip Oldham, AIA, Principal Architect with KAOD. “Our intent is to create a prototype that can be modified to fulfill the educational needs for each correctional facility while still maintaining an economically-efficient design package as the basis of each project.”
